No cargo in your vehicle is more precious than a baby on board. Suddenly every turn, stop signal, and bump in the road is a little scarier, a little more important, and could have a lot more consequences. Here at New England Tire, we want you to feel confident about your vehicle and its ability to handle the journeys you take with your child.
If you’re worried about a new baby in the car, a good place to start is with a complete auto check. You want to make sure that all the tools your vehicle needs to protect you and your child are in place. Consider having your brakes, power steering fluid, wiper fluids, and other critical systems in your vehicle checked before the baby comes on board.
Driving with a baby is no picnic, but we have a few tricks up our sleeves that might make it easier for you.
1. Be confident about your car seat. The last thing you need to focus on while driving is your baby’s car seat. Make sure the seat fits your vehicle properly and straps are adjusted where they should be.
2. Install a mirror. With the correct positioning, you can get an easy view of your child in the back seat. Use it like the rear view or side mirrors. Just like you check for traffic you can take a quick peek at your baby to make sure everything is ok and give you peace of mind.
3. Don’t travel alone if you don’t have to. A partner always comes in handy when traveling. Someone else driving gives you the ability to take care of the child or gives you the ability to not worry and just drive.
4. Make sure you are rested. Mothers are far more likely to get in auto accidents because of their lack of sleep. Before you take on the wheel ask yourself if you can.
5. Keep your child seat rear facing for as long as you can. Young children and babies are at risk for head and spinal injuries in the event of a crash. Rear-facing car seats will give more support and prevent your child’s head form some injuries.
6. Do not let your baby have food or toys in the car. These items can provide choking hazards and distractions from driving safely.
7. Ignore the crying. You have to commit to the task of safely transporting your child. If they begin to cry you have to stay focused. It’s hard to hear your baby crying but more than likely they are just hungry or restless. check on them when you can pull over and take a break but more than likely they will quiet down on their own.
Worry less about your precious cargo the next time you hit the road. Get plenty of rest, have a partner, ignore the small stuff, and make sure you get your vehicle checked.
