Be Careful On The Road This Winter

posted on

Yes, we know you’re a great driver. Of course you are. But when the snow starts to pile up, how good is your driving then? Here are some things to think about Winter Tires in Attleboro MAwhen the winter weather kicks in:

--Don’t use cruise control on snow, ice, or even wet pavement. You need the control of having your foot on the throttle.

--Slow down and keep your distance from other vehicles. The whole idea of “drive defensively” is based on not knowing what the other guy is going to do…and basically assuming he’s going to do something dumb, right in front of you.

--Slow down and be gentle with the throttle, the brake and steering inputs. On snow, all these can be a problem if you’re not careful. Remember that your 3-4 second margin of safety for braking should be pushed up to 8 or even 10 seconds.

--Most newer vehicles feature antilock brakes (ABS), which help prevent one or more wheels from locking up and skidding. It’s normal to feel a slight pulsation through the brake pedal as ABS brakes kick in. ABS also eliminates the need to “pump” the brakes; just keep your heel on the floorboard and use the ball of your foot on the brake pedal for gentle but firm pressure.

--Be aware of your car’s inertia. That means longer stopping distances, but it also means getting a bit of a “running start” to get up a hill…otherwise, you’re likely to just spin your wheels and break traction in the snow.

--Keep a well-stocked emergency kit in your car, with a blanket, gloves, protein-rich snacks, sweater, first aid kit, jumper cables and more.

--Make sure your tires are in good shape, with the right tire pressure and plenty of tread depth. If you have to encounter extreme winter conditions, consider a switch to winter tires for an appreciable increase in winter performance.

--Stay home if you can. If the weather forecasts are for a severe winter storm, you’re just safer getting out and getting your business done ahead of it, then waiting it out at home if at all possible.

What kind of shape are your tires in this winter? Do you maybe need to switch to winter tires? Make an appointment with us at New England Tire Car Care Centers and let’s get you set up for winter driving!
