You probably heard your dad say it -- "get your oil changed at regular intervals if you want to that car to last!!" -- and it's still true today.
There are so many moving parts inside an engine...pieces of metal that spin around or slide against each other at very close tolerances. Those moving parts generate a lot of friction, and inside the cylinders' combustion chambers, the spark plugs ignite a fuel/air mixture thousands of times per minute.
The thin film of motor oil between moving parts is what helps disperse heat from the engine. Without oil, your engine's moving parts would quickly overheat to a point where they'd actually weld to each other and seize the engine. As oil circulates in the engine, though, it starts to pick up acids and carbon from combustion and microscopic metal particles. Over time, oil becomes so contaminated that it loses its lubricating properties and starts to break down. Particles can be trapped in the paper element of the oil filter until the filter becomes saturated and can't absorb any more. If left too long, crusty carbon deposits can start to form on bearings and other crucial moving parts, and sludge buildup can clog internal engine passages.
Older formulations of motor oil called for a 3,000-mile oil change interval, but the detergents, friction modifiers and other additives in today's oil can extend that to a 5,000-mile interval. Synthetic motor oil outperforms conventional oil in about every respect, and while synthetic is considerably more expensive, it can go for a 10,000-mile interval between oil changes.
