Don’t Get Hothead This Summer : A/C Service

posted on
AC Repair for New England Car Care CentersSummer’s going to be here before you know it, and it’s time to start giving some thought to auto A/C repair. You don’t like driving around in a hot, sticky car and neither does anyone else. After all, an A/C system that barely works isn’t much better than one that doesn’t work at all. Here are a few things to bear in mind when you’re contemplating auto A/C repair:

  • In effect, your car’s A/C system is a heat exchanger, moving hot air out of the vehicle and replacing it with colder air. You can help it do its job more effectively if you can park in the shade with your windows down an inch or two. When you get in the car and drive off, lower all four windows for the first few minutes, helping to evacuate the hot air from the car’s interior,  making it easier for the A/C system to fill the car with cold air again.
  • In many, many cases, an A/C system that isn’t blowing cold air is just low on refrigerant. A car that’s only six or seven years old can still lose refrigerant over the colder months as seals, gaskets, hoses and other components shrink or degrade. In these instances, rather than an auto A/C repair, all that’s needed is a recharge of the system. At New England Tire Car Care Centers, we use a refrigerant that contains an oil to lubricate the compressor and a fluorescent dye that can easily indicate any leaks in the system.
  • If you’re driving an older car from before 1994, chances are it was designed to use R12 Freon refrigerant. R12 was found to be harmful to the ozone layer; since the ’94 model year, the government has mandated R134a refrigerant. Today, R12 is difficult to come by, but it’s pretty easy to retrofit older systems to use modern R134a refrigerant. Give us a call and we’ll gladly update your system by performing this minor auto A/C repair.
  • Lubrication is an essential part of any auto A/C system, so remember in the cooler months to run your car’s AC once a week or so. Even running the system for a few minutes can circulate refrigerant and oil through the system, keeping the compressor lubricated and the valves, lines and seals conditioned. Remembering this simple tip can prevent a costly auto AC repair in the warmer months!
If your auto A/C isn’t performing up to speed, don’t worry and in most cases, all that’s needed is a simple A/C tune-up and not an expensive auto A/C repair. Give us a call at New England Tire Car Care Centers, set up an appointment and we’ll make sure that you and your car are ready for the warm summer months to come!
